Engineer authors new standard for ventilating manure storage

A faculty member from the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering will be honored for authoring a new agricultural standard.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) will recognize Harvey Manbeck, distinguished professor emeritus of agricultural and biological engineering, for the development of the American National Standards Institute/ASABE S607, a standard for ventilating manure storage and reducing entry risk.

Dennis Murphy, distinguished professor of agricultural and biological engineering, and Juan Zhao, a postdoctoral scholar in the department, co-authored the standard's development.

The new standard provides farmers, emergency responders, agricultural facility planners and designers and building inspectors the guidelines needed to reduce exposure to noxious gases and low oxygen levels in confined manure storage areas.

Manbeck will be honored at the group's annual international meeting in Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 8.
