Emerita professor receives alma mater's alumni award

Cynthia Mara, associate professor emerita of health care administration at Penn State Harrisburg, has received the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Virginia School of Nursing.

Given by the Nursing Alumni Association, the award each year honors one alumnus who has significantly contributed to the nursing profession.

A faculty member since 1994, Mara specializes in research on aging, health systems organization and policy, and long-term care, with her work in the latter earning her the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She also served as principal investigator for a study assessing current and future need for long-term care services in Pennsylvania, funded by a $1.65 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

"The true measure of Dr. Mara as a person, role model, and nurse exemplar lies in her humble, gentle, and spiritual nature,” said Patricia Woodard, alumni association president.

A public institution located in Charlottesville, the University of Virginia enrolls more than 21,000 students.
