Gary White has been named head of the Department of Reference, Collections and Research (RCR) in Penn State University Libraries, effective Aug. 1. White will lead the Libraries in this organizational change to create new service models to support library engagement in teaching, learning and research. In this role, he will be a key partner in the Knowledge Commons and Research Commons initiatives.
White stated, “I am looking forward to working with the leadership of the Libraries and the University. The subject librarians in RCR work closely with their respective colleges to support Penn State’s academic mission. Our department will continue its outstanding service to students and faculty, while we develop new models to support research and teaching in the digital age.”
White has served as the acting head of RCR for the past two years and prior to that he served as Business Reference Librarian at Penn State Harrisburg and more recently as head of the Schreyer Business Library in Paterno Library.
White has a bachelor of science in psychology from Youngstown State, a masters of library science from Kent State, a masters of business administration from the University of Akron, and he is currently working on a doctorate in higher education at Penn State. He is currently president of the Reference and User Services Association, a 5,000-member division of the American Library Association.
