New SUST designation adopted for University's sustainability courses

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- As Penn State prepares to launch a new minor in sustainability leadership, a new course designation, SUST, has been adopted to designate courses that focus on sustainability material.

“This new designation will be applied to newly-developed sustainability-focused courses from departments across the university and -- when a cross-listing is appropriate -- to already-existing courses” said Susannah Barsom, associate director of Penn State’s Center for Sustainability (CfS). In the fall of 2010, as part of the university’s first Sustainability Tracking and Reporting System survey (STARS), the CfS collected data on sustainability courses.

“Through the STARS survey, we gathered information on over a hundred sustainability-related and sustainability-focused courses, offered through 47 different departments,” said Barsom.

A new foundations course for the minor in sustainability leadership, Foundations of Leadership in Sustainability (SUST 200), will pave the way for other new sustainability-related courses to be developed at Penn State. SUST 200 is slated to debut in Spring 2012.
