HUB-Robeson galleries featuring work of alumnus Sharif Bey

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The HUB-Robeson Galleries are showcasing the artwork of Sharif Bey through Dec. 4 in the HUB Gallery. Bey’s current works cross-references contemporary ornamentation with forms and surfaces associated with various traditional African jewelry/currencies. Through his work, he explores the bead necklace as a symbol for cultural and political identity.

Sharif Bey is an assistant professor of art education at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. He earned a doctorate in art education from Penn State and holds a master of fine arts degree in studio art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Bey is a teaching artist with extensive experience in ceramics and art-teacher training, and has facilitated collaborative opportunities for adults and K-12 students in museums, arts centers, schools and universities throughout the United States. In addition to being an active teacher, Bey continues to exhibit nationally and internationally. As a Fulbright scholar, he was an artist in residence at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2003 and 2004.
