October is Careers that Make a Difference Month at Smeal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Office of Career and Corporate Connections at the Penn State Smeal College of Business has deemed October to be Careers that Make a Difference Month and is working with local and national organizations to highlight career options with nonprofits and other ways to leverage one's career for the greater good.

Sponsored by the Smeal student group Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations, the month-long celebration of careers that make a difference culminates on Oct. 25 with a nonprofit career fair in the Business Building Atrium. The first of its kind at Smeal, this networking and recruitment event will include representatives from local, state and national nonprofit organizations on hand to discuss career opportunities with Penn State students.

The fair runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Attending students should dress in business professional attire and bring copies of their resumes.

"More and more, our students are interested in ways in which they can use their business education to give back to their communities and better society as a whole," said Meg Handley, director of Career and Corporate Connections at Smeal. "There are a lot of opportunities out there and we're trying something new to make them more accessible to our students."

The month's activities get under way on Oct. 5 with an educational banquet in Smeal's Business Building. The event will educate students on issues in poverty while exploring how they can put their business degrees to work to better their communities. The banquet will also serve as a food drive for the Food Bank of the State College Area.

The month-long agenda of events also includes receptions with corporate and nonprofit executives, panel discussions on issues like poverty and corporate social responsibility, and an information session on Smeal's Global Impact Internship program, which assists students who want to intern or volunteer overseas.
