Penn State Executive Programs wins award for Office Depot partnership

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – For the second year in row, Penn State Executive Programs has won Chief Learning Officer magazine's highest executive education partnership award.

Penn State Executive Programs won the magazine's 2011 Gold award for Excellence in Academic Partnerships for its work with Office Depot. The award recognizes academic institutions that have partnered in the past year with an organization to teach its employees about a key business issue.

Office Depot partnered with Penn State Executive Programs, the executive education division of the Smeal College of Business, to help the company transform its supply chain leadership to tackle strategic initiatives, establish a collaborative environment that speeds innovation, and implement continuous process improvement. The company selected Penn State as its academic partner because of its collaborative engagement model with clients, its ability to extend action learning beyond the classroom to create business results, and its outstanding reputation in supply chain research and education, including being ranked No. 1 in supply chain education by Gartner. 

Working collaboratively with Office Depot leaders in supply chain, human resources and organizational development, faculty from Smeal and Penn State's Center for Supply Chain Research created an integrated Supply Chain Leadership Development solution. The results of the program are already evident at Office Depot. For example, several of the program's participants have been promoted, including two individuals who were appointed to vice president-level positions. Recommendations generated by project teams are being implemented and beginning to generate real results. And Office Depot’s earnings press release for the second quarter of 2011 lists reduced distribution costs and operational efficiencies a factor in improved performance.

Each year, CLO magazine, the leading publication in the workforce learning and development industry, presents awards to learning industry leaders who have demonstrated excellence in the design and delivery of workforce learning and development programs. This year's awards were presented at the fall 2011 Chief Learning Officer Symposium held Oct. 12-14 at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, near Dana Point, Calif.
