Nov. 9 lecture to feature former Joint Chiefs of Staff vice chairman

Retired Marine Corps Gen. James E. Cartwright, former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and current Harold Brown Chair in Defense Policy Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will present "Strategic Leadership Challenges for the 21st Century" from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus.

The event is free and open to the public.         

The presentation will focus on leadership challenges that emerge from technological systems innovation and integration, including nuclear, biological, chemical and cyber threats.

Cartwright served as the commander of the U.S. Strategic Command from 2004 to 2007. He then served as the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from August 2007 until August 2011 when he retired from the Marine Corps after more than 40 years of service.

The event is sponsored by the Strategic and Global Security Program, the Engineering Leadership Development Minor and the School of International Affairs.
