-- Cindy Raynak, senior instructional designer and consultant in the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will lead “Online New Instructor Orientation” from Monday, Jan. 16 through Friday, Feb. 24. Good teaching involves planning, lots of it and at every level.  This online, self-directed workshop, open to all new instructors at Penn State, is offered at the start of each semester through ANGEL, Penn State’s course management system.  This self-directed workshop will provide you with a brief introduction to the resources and strategies that are crucial to good teaching and planning.  ANGEL access information will be provided to participants in early August. The New Instructor Orientation is free and open to all instructors at Penn State. In order to receive a letter of completion participants will need to complete two assignments. Completion of the New Instructor Orientation satisfies a requirement of the Graduate School Teaching Certificate.

-- Kathy Jackson, senior research associate and Crystal Ramsay, instructional consultant in the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will host “Teaching Millennials: Engaging our Students with Instructional Strategies” from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, in room 315 Rider Building, on the University Park campus and via Polycom. Our new generation of students, the Millennials, appear to be presenting educators with a different set of challenges. This session will begin with a quick overview of these students' characteristics, but will then get down to the business of teaching. What can you do to provide educational experiences that build upon the distinctiveness of Millennial students and take into account current research on learning? We'll share some suggested research-based strategies and you'll get an opportunity to question, if and how, these strategies will work in your classrooms. This session will be offered in a face-to-face format in 315 Rider Building, University Park, and via Polycom to a maximum of four additional locations.Participants are free to bring their own beverages and lunch.
