Penn State Beaver students continued their tradition of 'A Day On, Not a Day Off,' as they joined with students from other western Penn State campuses to conduct community services projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16. The day is a holiday for Penn State students, but many of them will be working in outreach projects throughout the region.
Every year a variety of students from Penn State’s western campuses come together to conduct outreach efforts in their local communities. This year’s primary coordinating campus is Penn State New Kensington. Robin Schreck, coordinator of student activities and residence life, will take Beaver students to New Kensington to work with them in service projects there.
Additional Beaver campus students will work locally at community outreach centers, including Beaver County Habitat for Humanity; the Center for Hope in Ambridge which offers a food and clothing bank, literacy services, and life skills training; and Uncommon Grounds in Aliquippa which was established with support from Church Army U.S.A. and area Episcopalian churches. The group hopes to heal and reconnect with areas residents by offering food, conversation, church youth events, art exhibits, musical performances, and a variety of other activities, including a ministry that works with incarcerated women in Aliquippa.
