Penn State Hershey launches the Innovation Cafe

Nearly 100 members of the Penn State Hershey and regional community attended the launch of the Innovation Cafe with the inaugural networking and forum event on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, the Office of Technology Development and the Hershey Center for Applied Research, the event provided Penn State Hershey faculty and staff the opportunity to engage in the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem, including their peers at other regional universities, investors, firms specializing in intellectual property and patent law, and life sciences incubators, and others focused on innovation and commercialization.

Attendees heard from Stephen Tang, president and CEO of the University City Science Center in Philadelphia and Harrisburg University board member, who spoke about the experiences of the Philadelphia life sciences community in growing a culture and ecosystem supportive of entrepreneurship. Gavin Robertson, director of the Penn State Hershey Melanoma Center, gave a therapeutic technology presentation featuring work he’s done on compounds with promise to better treat melanoma, research that led him to form a new company, MelanomeX Oncology.

A video recording of the event is available here.

The goal of the Innovation Cafe initiative is to engage faculty, staff, and regional stakeholders in an ongoing conversation about fueling central Pennsylvania’s “entrepreneurial ecosystem” -- a network of people and organizations with the tools and expertise to help bring research ideas out of the places they originate and into the community where they can benefit the people we serve.

The next Innovation Cafe networking and forum event is set for 8 a.m. March 5 at the Hershey Center for Applied Research building on Research Park Boulevard in Hershey. The guest speaker will be Jim Greenwood, CEO of National BIO -- Biotechnology Industry Organization and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
