Earth Fest 2012 to feature artists' market, live music and more

Adults and children of all ages are invited to join the fun at Penn State Shenango’s Earth Fest 2012 from noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children’s activities, recycling events, an artists’ market, Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, eco-friendly cars from Montrose Nissan and Mel Grata Chevrolet, and more. Food will be available to purchase. Stop by the Lengel Bros. Farm and Market table to sign up for the day’s grand prize of a free box of produce weekly between August and October (a $200 value).

Scheduled events include a bicycle safety program (which begins prior to the event at 11 a.m.), a seminar on good bugs and bad bugs for gardening by Master Gardener and author TC Conner, music by environmental folk singer (and alumnus from Hickory High School) Bill Oliver aka “Mr. Habitat” from Austin, Texas, and a presentation by Tom Amundsen on Shenango Valley Community Gardens. Penn State Shenango students will also present on their adventures saving leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica during Spring Break 2012.

Other activities throughout the day include Earth Day-themed games and crafts for children and an opportunity to shop in an eco-friendly local artist’s market. Penn State Shenango’s Information Technology and Business Clubs will be holding recycling drives for computer equipment and tires. Representatives from local organizations and businesses will be on hand to share information on ways that each of us can reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the environment.

Earth Fest 2012 is being co-sponsored by WKBN and Fox Television. We hope you will join us in celebrating Earth Day at Penn State Shenango. For a complete schedule of events, or for more information on Earth Fest 2012, contact the Student Affairs office at 724-983-2836 or visit
