University hires Clery compliance coordinator

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State Police and Public Safety has hired Gabriel Gates to be its new Clery compliance coordinator. Gates, who began his new duties on March 26, will report to Steve Shelow, assistant vice president for Police and Public Safety, in order to provide administrative and advisory support to senior management and the University-wide community.

"Gabe will work collaboratively with various offices at the University to develop, implement and oversee programs that ensure the institution's overall compliance with the Clery Act and associated regulations at all campuses," said Shelow. "He also will work with various University offices to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Sexual Assault Victim's Bill of Rights and Drug Free Schools and Safe Campuses regulations."

Gates also will research protocols and other government, local and University mandates, and provide guidance and recommendations to ensure the University and its employees are in compliance with those as well.

"I am excited to be part of a dedicated and passionate team working to ensure Penn State remains an institution of excellence and honor," Gates said. "The administration has made it clear to me that the safety and security of the Penn State community is of paramount importance and will not be compromised for any reason. My goal as the compliance coordinator is not to ensure that Penn State simply meets the requirements set forth by federal law, but rather to become an industry leader in safety and security reporting. Through new training initiatives and safety policies, I feel Penn State will have one of the most comprehensive Clery Act compliance programs in the country."

Gates is a graduate of Mount Aloysius College, with a bachelor's degree in criminology with a concentration in forensic accounting. He comes to Penn State from Maersk Line Ltd. in Norfolk, Va., where he was senior financial compliance analyst. His duties there included review and implementation of company procedures to ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws as well as industry standards. Before that, he was team leader and compliance auditor for the Department of Defense Naval Audit Service. In that role, he planned, organized and conducted operational and compliance audits of Navy-wide operations, and assisted Naval Criminal Investigative Services to identify stolen and unaccounted for government assets.
