Kunz honored with McKay Donkin Award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Avis Kunz, assistant dean for outreach and online education in the College of the Liberal Arts, is the winner of the 2012 McKay Donkin Award.

Established in 1969 in honor of the late McKay Donkin, who served as vice president and treasurer of the University from 1957 to 1968, the award is presented to a full-time member of the faculty or staff or to a retiree who has contributed most to the “economic, physical, mental or social welfare of the faculty” of the University. The contribution should be for duties or services above and beyond the recipient’s regularly assigned duties.

Kunz is recognized for her leadership role in developing the College’s World Campus portfolio of more than 100 courses, many of them fulfilling general education requirements. Over the five years ending in 2009-10, total enrollment in those courses grew by nearly 300 percent to 12,690 course enrollments, and courses from the College of the Liberal Arts now make up over half of the World Campus general undergraduate portfolio.

One nominator wrote, “Growth of this magnitude could only be achieved through vision, strategic planning, and collaboration. Avis was a cooperative, collaborative partner with the World Campus, working together to strive for a high-quality liberal arts online curriculum.”

Revenues from the World Campus portfolio provide significant support for both general departmental and specific faculty operating expenses within the College. “These funds have made it possible for departments not only to pay for their operations, but to continue to support our faculty with funds necessary for their teaching and research, including money to start new research projects, to support student assistants, and to buy the equipment and software they need. And, with its share, the College is able to continue to support the recruitment of outstanding faculty and to support the research and teaching needs of those already here,” a nominator said.
