University Health Services clinician receives ally award

Jill Buchanan, a nurse practitioner with University Health Services (UHS) has received the 2012 Ally Recognition Award from Penn State's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE). Presented during the Lavender Graduation Ceremony held April 20, the Ally Award is given to an individual within the University community who has shown outstanding service regarding LGBTQ concerns.

Buchanan was nominated for the award by Cameron O'Mara for her work integrating LGBTQ concerns into healthcare services at UHS. A graduate student, O'Mara serves on the Transgender Task Force for Penn State's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE). In his nomination he wrote in part, "Not only does Jill embody the care and attention to marginalized communities that is the sine qua non of a Nurse Practitioner, she also goes beyond the pale in her ability to mobilize others to dedicate themselves to these issues.

Buchanan has provided women's health care at UHS for over 22 years. Her approach to health care is holistic. "To effectively treat our patients, we must look at all aspects that contribute to an individual's well-being," Buchanan explains. "Certainly sexuality and sexual identity are important factors in achieving balanced living." She adds, "I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the UHS team. It is my hope that our new resource page and other initiatives will provide LGBT students with a stronger sense of support."

Penn State's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE) is an advisory group to the University President charged with addressing issues affecting the welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) members of the University community.
