Added alumni, employee, student leaders invited to trustees meetings

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State President Rodney Erickson has extended invitations to five additional representatives of several University constituencies -- alumni, faculty, staff and students -- to participate in the University's Board of Trustees committees and meetings.

This invitation, effective with the trustees' July 2012 meeting, expands a Board of Trustees standing order in place since the mid-1970s, in which three faculty members and three student representatives are invited by the president of the University to attend and participate in committees and meetings.

Newly invited by President Erickson are the president of the Penn State Alumni Association, chair and immediate past chair of the University Staff Advisory Council, chair of the University Faculty Senate’s University Planning Committee and vice president of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA). Next year, the vice president of the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG) will be invited. The fourth student representative, appointed from a joint recommendation of the UPUA and CCSG presidents and Vice President for Student Affairs Damon Sims, is expected to alternate yearly between an undergraduate student from UPUA and CCSG.

The new representatives are Katie Smarilli, president of the Penn State Alumni Association; Ginny Hosterman, immediate past chair, and Crystal Hubler, chair of the University Staff Advisory Council; Roger Egolf, chair of the University Faculty Senate University Planning Committee; and Katelyn Mullen, vice president of UPUA. They join faculty members Larry Backer, Pam Hufnagel and Brent Yarnal, and students Ben Clark, Wanika Fisher and Courtney Lennartz, all of whom have been invited to attend Board of Trustees meetings since they assumed leadership positions with the University Faculty Senate, the Graduate Student Association, CCSG and UPUA.

These representatives will serve on four of five committees as revised by the Board of Trustees at its March 2012 meeting. The Audit, Risk, Legal and Compliance Committee will not have regular representation from constituent groups. Representatives' committee assignments are as follows:

Academic Affairs and Student Life:
-- chair-elect, University Faculty Senate (Brent Yarnal)
-- president, University Park Undergraduate Association (Courtney Lennartz)
-- immediate past chair, University Staff Advisory Council (Ginny Hosterman)

Finance, Business and Capital Planning:
-- chair, University Faculty Senate (Larry Backer)
-- president, Graduate Student Association (Wanika Fisher)

Governance and Long-Range Planning:
-- chair, University Faculty Senate University Planning Committee (Roger Egolf)
-- vice president, University Park Undergraduate Association (Katelyn Mullen)

Outreach, Development and Community Relations:
-- secretary, University Faculty Senate (Pam Hufnagel)
-- president, Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (Ben Clark)
-- chair, University Staff Advisory Council (Crystal Hubler)
-- president, Penn State Alumni Association (Katie Smarilli)

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held July 12-13 at the Penn State Worthington Scranton campus.
