Alumni Library highlights Marcellus Shale resources

From 2007 through 2011, there were more than 16,000 articles in Pennsylvania newspapers that mentioned the Marcellus Shale and more than 29,000 articles nationally (data obtained from the Access World News database). Prior to this, hardly anyone had heard of the Marcellus Shale. The recent issue of the Alumni Library at alumni.libraries.psu.edu examines information related to the natural gas resources in the Marcellus Shale and other natural-gas-bearing black shales in the U.S.

Other features this issue focus on the talent of Penn State alumni authors, and on Penn Staters who have participated in the Olympic Games,  in light of the approaching Summer Olympic Games in London.

Regular features include resource centers with information on agriculture, business, careers, genealogy and more. Alumni Association members have access to JSTOR, a database of multidisciplinary and discipline specific scholarly articles in the sciences and humanities. Other Search Tools include Ebsco's Academic Search, Project Muse and ProQuest products (ABI and National Newspapers).

These resources and more can be found at Penn State's Alumni Library, a joint project of the University Libraries and the Penn State Alumni Association. The Penn State Alumni Association strives to connect alumni to the University, to each other, provide valuable benefits to members, and support the University’s mission of teaching, research and service. Penn State University Libraries, with more than 5.8 million volumes, 100,000 serial subscriptions, 579 online databases and more than 203,000 e-books, constitute a major resource for students, faculty and staff, as well as residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The largest research library in Pennsylvania, it is one of four resource libraries that provide service and collections to all other libraries and residents of the commonwealth.
