Varsity coaches issue statements on NCAA penalties

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Several Penn State varsity athletics coaches issued statements regarding the penalties and corrective actions announced Monday (July 23) by the NCAA.

Women's volleyball coach Russ Rose said, "[O]ur thoughts and prayers continue for the victims and the families that have been affected by these heinous crimes and for victims of child abuse worldwide."

He assured players, parents and fans that no funding for volleyball or Penn State's other varsity teams would be reduced as a result of the sanctions and financial penalties issued by the NCAA.

"Penn State women's volleyball will continue to represent our world-class university in the fashion it has for decades," Rose said. "We will compete for championships, strive for excellence in the classroom and develop future leaders who care deeply about our university and community."

Added field hockey coach Char Morett, "Today our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of child abuse worldwide. While the NCAA has issued its sanctions upon Penn State, we will accept them humbly and move forward to upkeep the integrity and class as Penn State coaches and student-athletes."

Football coach Bill O'Brien and acting athletic director Dave Joyner issued statements on Monday following the NCAA's announcement.
