Police investigate report of indecent assault

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- An indecent assault was reported to University Police at 2:14 a.m. on Sept. 4. The reported assault occurred between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on Sept. 4, on a section of sidewalk located on the east side of Sackett Building.

University Police also have posted this timely warning alert.

The victim, a student, reported an unknown intoxicated male, who was with two other unknown intoxicated males, approached her as she was walking on the sidewalk near the intersection of West College Avenue and South Allen Street. One of the unknown males reached underneath her shirt and inappropriately touched her. The group then fled the area running westbound. Officers searched the area and were unable to locate them.

The suspect is described as a white male with dark hair, possibly brown, between the ages of 17 and 19. The two other unknown males also were described as 17-19 years of age. One was described as Asian and possibly wearing a white T-shirt. The other was described as White with dark hair.

University Police have shared the following safety tips:

  • Do not accept rides or walking accompaniment from people you don't know well or trust.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, get to a safe place and call for help.
  • Report all suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to your University Police department immediately.
  • Tell someone you trust your destination and planned time of return.
  • Perpetrators are responsible for sexual assaults. Perpetrators take advantage of vulnerability and seek opportunities to commit sexual assaults.

It can be assumed that conditions that continue to exist that may pose a threat to members and guests of the University community. It is the duty of the administration to warn of possible "dangerous conditions" on or near the campus, and at affiliate organizations off campus; an "affirmative duty" exists to warn persons associated to the University of possible peril at the hands at some third party or parties.
