'Superstar' sets box office record for Center Theatre Players

More than 1,000 people attended last week’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” breaking box office records for the Center Theatre Players (CTP) who presented the musical in honor of their thirtieth anniversary of performances for the Penn State Beaver Brodhead Cultural Center.

The show was held July 26, 27 and 28 in the auditorium of the campus Student Union Building and was directed by CTP founder Sandy Reigel, a Beaver campus alumna and graduate of Penn State University Park.

“I was amazed but so happy to see that we sold out the house every night of the show this summer,” Reigel said. “We’ve done many, many musicals for the Cultural Center over the years, but this one really seemed to reach out to people. I’ve done “Superstar” twice before for the Cultural Center but, for whatever reason, this “Superstar” gained momentum early, and people came out to support us in record numbers.”

“Sometimes a certain show just sparks with the public,” said Amy M. Krebs, director of Beaver campus and community relations and the Brodhead Cultural Center. “This musical is more than 40 years old, but it speaks to so many different generations through its powerful music, lyrics, and, of course, its theme.”

More than 60 cast, crew and orchestra members were involved in the production which featured professional and amateur performers ranging in age from 9 to 60.

This summer marks the Cultural Center’s 36th season of programming. Co-sponsors for this year’s series include The Times, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, Inc., and the Beaver Valley Musicians Union Local 82-545.
