Penn State Lehigh Valley to offer B.A. in corporate communication

Beginning in fall 2012, Penn State Lehigh Valley will offer the bachelor of arts degree in corporate communication, which prepares Penn State students in fields such as public information and media relations.

Graduates have found positions in profit and nonprofit organizations. The program is distinguished by its cross-disciplinary course work in business, information systems, psychology, human behavior, and communication.

This degree also provides a broad foundation in business principles, leading to potential success in all management fields that require strong communication skills. Students learn through team projects and problem solving exercises that prepare them for culminating internships in a variety of professional settings. Graduates bring ethical awareness, excellent communication skills – oral, written, and visual – and understanding of human relations to the growing social and cultural diversity of both local and global business environments.

"Every facet of society depends on effective communication to operate at its fullest. Employers seek workers who communicate well to represent their organizations," said Nichola Gutgold, the program coordinator for corporate communication. "Penn State Lehigh Valley's B.A. in Corporate Communication prepares students for careers as spokespeople, public relations professionals, writers, editors, and a host of other careers where speaking and writing well are essential."

Kenneth Thigpen, who worked to bring this degree to the Lehigh Valley campus, has high expectations for students earning this degree. He points out that, "The range of opportunities for graduates with this degree is amazing. You can be an entrepreneur, launching and promoting your own business. You can work for large or small corporations, family businesses, the retail or nonprofit sector. This is a degree of opportunity."
