Campus sports: Volleyball and soccer undefeated in conference

The Penn State New Kensington women’s volleyball and men’s soccer teams are in the midst of the their conference schedules, and both teams are undefeated in league play.

Volleyball team travels east for a pair of conference matches at Penn State York on Saturday, Sept. 29, and a pair at Penn State Schuylkill on Sunday, Sept. 30. The New Kensington Lady Lions face Penn State Mont Alto at noon on Saturday and York at 2 p.m. The next day, coach Dave McGeary’s squad takes on Schuylkill at noon and Penn State Brandywine at 2 p.m.

The Lady Lions opened their Penn State University Athletic Conference with a home win Sept. 22, downing Penn State DuBois, 3-2, in the Athletics Center. Sophomore libero Kara Staley paved the way for a 1-0 conference record with 12 kills. Sophomore setter Jordan Miller has 23 assists, and freshman middle hitter Kennington Knapp added three blocks. The New Kensington Lady Lions are 3-6 overall.

The men's soccer team opens a two-game home stand at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, versus Mt. Aloysius in a nonconference game before facing Penn State Brandywine at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, in PSUAC match. Both home games will be held at Valley High School in New Kensington. Due to renovations to the campus soccer field, this year’s home games will be played at Valley.

First-year coach Pat Cavanaugh’s squad took over first-place in the PSUAC with a pair of road wins, Sept. 22-23, against Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 2-1, and Penn State Schuylkill, 5-0. With the victories, the New Kensington Lions remain undefeated at 5-0, a half-game ahead of Penn College, 4-0. The two teams meet Oct 11 at New Kensington. Junior forward Ashutosh Pandey scored his team leading sixth goal in the Wilkes-Barre game. Freshman goalie Jimmy Cook earned his second shutout against Schuylkill.

The golf team concludes its regular season on the road with a PSUAC tournament, the Hazleton Invitational, at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf, Pa. The New Kensington Lions have been rained out twice this season, Sept. 4 at Brookside Country Club in Allentown and Sept. 18 at Irem Country Club in Wilkes-Barre.
