Governor nominates alumna and past SEC commissioner for board service

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Gov. Tom Corbett on Tuesday (Oct. 2) nominated Kathleen L. Casey as a member of Penn State's Board of Trustees to replace former Trustee Michael DiBerardinis, whose term expired. Casey's nomination, which is for a three-year term, must be confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Casey, a 1988 graduate of Penn State, completed a five-year term as a commissioner with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in August 2011. During her tenure, Casey acted as the SEC's principal representative to various international boards and commissions, including the G-20 Financial Stability Board and International Organization of Securities Commissions.

"We applaud Gov. Corbett for nominating Kathleen Casey to the Penn State Board of Trustees,” said Karen Peetz, chair of the board. "Her broad experience, especially the many roles she has played in oversight organizations such as the Securities Exchange Commission and Public Company Accounting Oversight Board Advisory Council, can be of clear value to Penn State. Service on the Penn State Board of Trustees comes at a time of challenge, but also at a time of opportunity, and we value the expertise Ms. Casey can bring to our great institution."

Casey, of Arlington, Va., currently serves as a senior adviser for Patomak Global Partners, which offers strategic advice on legislative and regulatory developments that impact corporate decision-making.

She was recently named chair of the Alternative Investment Management Association. She also serves as a Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Center for Financial Markets and Policy at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, a member of the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board and the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board Advisory Council.

Before her tenure with the SEC, Casey served as staff director and counsel to the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

Casey, who is no relation to Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey of Scranton, earned her law degree in 1993 from George Mason University School of Law.

Penn State's Board of Trustees has 32 members, six of them appointed by the governor. Four cabinet members are ex-officio members, including the Governor and the secretaries of agriculture, education, and conservation and natural resources.
