Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence announces upcoming events

Penn State's Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence has announced the following events: “Creating an ePortfolio” and “Best Practices for PowerPoint: Tips for Teachers.”

-- Lauren Kooistra and Andrew Porter, graduate consultants with the Schreyer Institute, will lead “Creating an ePortfolio” from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 17, in Room 315 of the Rider Building on the University Park campus. The interactive workshop will focus on how graduate students can create an online portfolio to document their teaching. Among the topics are, developing an online presence for the portfolio (i.e., ePortfolio), choosing the right development platform, incorporating teaching materials in the portfolio and documenting your effectiveness as a teacher by interpreting Student Rating of Teacher Effectiveness results and providing evidence from teaching observations. This workshop is part of a three-seminar series focusing on professional development and preparation for the job market. All graduate students and post-doctoral students are welcome to attend, especially individuals who plan to enter the job market soon. To register, go to http://www.schreyerinstitute.psu.edu/Events?id=10529.

-- Kooistra and Porter also will lead “Creating an ePortfolio” from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 18, in Room 315 of the Rider Building on the University Park campus. To register for that session, go to http://www.schreyerinstitute.psu.edu/Events?id=10528.

-- Chas Brua, instructional consultant with the Schreyer Institute, will lead “Best Practices for PowerPoint: Tips for Teachers” from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in Room 315 of the Rider Building and through Adobe Connect at https://meeting.psu.edu/powerpoint. PowerPoint is one of the most commonly used technologies in teaching -- but in terms of promoting student learning, it’s often used less effectively. The workshop will present current issues and research regarding the effective use of PowerPoint. Building on work by communication experts Edward Tufte, Jean-luc Doumont and Penn State's Michael Alley, Brua will present and demonstrate simple but solid guidelines for effective slideshow design. To register, go to http://www.schreyerinstitute.psu.edu/Events?id=10503.
