Slay named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Junior Katie Slay (Raleigh, N.C.) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday. This is the second honor of the season for Slay.

Slay led Penn State to two wins over the weekend to improve the Nittany Lions to 16-1overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions defeated Northwestern on Oct. 5, 3-0, and No. 21 Illinois, 3-2, on Oct. 6. For the weekend, Slay was second on the team with 26 kills on a team-best .458 hitting percentage, and she averaged 3.25 kills per set. Slay led the team in blocks with 14, averaging 1.75 blocks per set.

Against the Wildcats, Slay led Penn State with 11 kills with only one error in 20 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. She also had a match-high seven total blocks. Against the Fighting Illini, Slay was second on the team with a season-high 15 kills on .429 hitting and also posted seven blocks.

Penn State hosts No. 12 Purdue and Indiana on Oct. 12-13 at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions face the Boilermakers at 8 p.m. on Oct. 12 before taking on the Hoosiers at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13.
