Students enter a due date for a research assignment into the calculator at https://ac.libraries.psu.edu/rpc/, which then breaks down the project into steps, providing sources for help and information along the way. Students have the option to have the steps emailed to them as reminders throughout the process and to make notes. The calculator is based on the University of Minnesota's open source Assignment Calculator.

Instructions on how to use the calculator are available at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/toolswidgets/rpc_instruct.html.
