Litzenberger retires after nearly 40 years of service

After nearly 40 years of service to Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education, Sandra M. "Sandy" Litzenberger retired in October 2012.

In September 1973, Litzenberger began her Penn State career working part time in the then Penn State Allentown Ridge Avenue facility in Continuing Education (CE) processing bulk mailings and assisting in the registration office. She became a full-time secretary in 1974 in the CE office and was involved in all aspects of continuing education including registration, filing, typing and working with students and faculty, assisting in setting up undergraduate and graduate evening and summer program credit courses, noncredit activities, and management development programs.

In 1993 Litzenberger was promoted to program assistant, coordinating graduate and nongraduate programs -- paralegal, real estate, nurse assistant and medical office program certificates, Welfare-to-Work and displaced workers training with the Hispanic American Organization and Bethlehem Steel, assisting Management Development and the Lehigh Valley Writing Project, and supporting the Youth Enrichment Partnership 2000 and the PIC High School Precollege Programs. Additionally, she was the administrator of a $250,000 budget for noncredit programming.

Promoted to CE area representative in 2003, Litzenberger directed all aspects of the Academic Employment Training Program for High School Students. She successfully wrote, submitted and was awarded grants each year. She coordinated writing and math programs for Roosevelt Elementary School through Allentown Housing Authority grants. While at the Overlook Park facility, she coordinated programs with the Literacy Center of Lehigh Valley, and assisted individuals who visited the computer labs with work applications, resumes, homework, etc.

Litzenberger received the Penn State Lehigh Valley Outstanding Staff Award for 2002-03 for outstanding dedication and commitment to the campus. In addition, she was the 2003 Penn State University Outstanding Employee in Continuing Education.

Litzenberger and her husband Dale recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. The couple has three children -- Michael, James and Denise -- and six grandchildren.
