Rockstar nutritionist combines education and entertainment

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Jill Jayne, a 2004 Penn State graduate in nutrition, will give a presentation, titled "Nutrition Education Through Entertainment," on at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, as part of the College of Health and Human Development Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series. The talk, which is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Development Alumni Society, will be held in the Bennett Pierce Living Center, 110 Henderson Building. It is free and open to the public.

Jayne refers to herself as the country’s only "rockstar nutritionist." She is the creator of the live rock ‘n roll nutrition show "Jump with Jill," the accompanying audio CD "Get Me Goin" and the teacher toolkit "Nutrition Rock Invasion." Her presentation on Nov. 1 will consist of a professional version of "Jump with Jill" with sound.

"Jump with Jill" has been performed for over 170,000 kids across the United States and Europe and has been featured in national media outlets, including National Public Radio, Sprout, PBS, The Washington Post, Nickelodeon’s Parents Connect and industry trade publications. Her original music and video productions have led her to the White House to meet Michelle Obama and have garnered her a 2011 Grammy nomination consideration for Best Children's Album.

Jayne spent years as a mainstream recording artist with her rock band Sunset West, with whom she appeared on The Vans Warped Tour and the American Idol spin-off The Next Great American Band on FOX. Her stage credits also include off-Broadway actress, Radio Disney DJ, sketch comedy music writer, and performer and jazz pianist.

In addition to being an accomplished musician, Jayne is a registered dietitian with a bachelor’s degree in nutritional sciences and in theatre from Penn State and a master’s degree in nutrition education from Teachers College Columbia University. Before becoming a professional "rockstar nutritionist," she was a writer, producer and host of the nationally syndicated children's nutrition news program "What’s in the News" for PBS as well as a New York City public school teacher.
