Beaver campus students continue community outreach efforts

As the holidays approach, Penn State Beaver students continue to implement and/or participate in a variety of community outreach projects.

The Lion Ambassadors and the Blue & White Society are participating in the annual Gift Drive for Beaver County Children and Youth Services (CYS) sponsored by the Beaver Valley Area Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Members of each group select the first names of children who are CYS clients, then raise funds and/or contribute personally to buy and wrap gifts for the children. Both groups are University-wide student organizations with chapters at all campus locations.

The Lion Ambassadors communicate Penn State's history and personality, strengthen University traditions, and instill Penn State pride in current and future students, alumni and friends. The group fosters the idea that involvement with Penn State is a lifelong commitment.

The Blue & White Society is the student contingent of the Penn State Alumni Association, the largest dues-paying alumni association in the world. Students are involved in social, service and networking events, and are able to network with more than 560,000 Penn State alumni around the world.

Campus students are also participating in the annual Gift Drive sponsored by the Women’s Center of Beaver County to benefit the children of families served. The Beaver Varsity Club will coordinate the gift drive when the Beaver Nittany Lions men’s basketball team hosts the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20, in the gym.

The public is invited to attend the game and are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy. Gifts for children of all ages are welcome. The first 100 fans to make a donation will receive a free T-shirt and will be entered into a special drawing for various prizes.

The Beaver campus THON Committee recently hosted a 12-hour Mini-THON as part of its overall, yearlong fundraising efforts to support the annual Penn State Dance Marathon for pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. The event raised almost $1,000 in cash and featured two live bands and two live solo performers. In addition, goodie baskets and more than 30 gift certificates and gift cards were donated by area businesses and organizations for distribution at the Mini-THON where students also hosted a wide variety of games.

Earlier this month, students in the Spanish 1 class celebrated the longtime tradition of Day of the Dead with an exhibit of altars displayed on campus. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday, celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures, to pray for and remember deceased family members and friends.
Exhibit visitors were asked to vote for their favorite altar with a donation, and all proceeds benefitted the Beaver students’ fundraising efforts for THON.

In addition, the Student Government Association (SGA) recently implemented a donation drive for the Women’s Center and collected a wide range of non-perishable food, bedding, paper and cleaning products along with clothing for the women and children served by the center.
