Co-op, internship student of the year awards announced

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Engineering Career Resources and Employer Relations office has awarded its top honors to two students for 2012-13.

Sienna George, a senior majoring in chemical engineering and toxicology, received the Dr. James Slick Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award for completing her co-op at Dow Agrosciences. At Dow, her responsibilities included leading a team of supply chain specialists in charge of evaluating and designing a bulk terminal network for new products.

She is currently president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a member of the Global Water Brigades and Society of Women Engineers, and a mentor for both the Women in Engineering Program Orientation (WEPO) and the Penn State Engineering Orientation Network (EON).

Katherine Shea, a senior in mechanical engineering, received the Anita M. Todd Internship Student of the Year Award for completing her internship at ArcelorMittal USA. Her responsibilities included supervising a 40-person workforce in a steel manufacturing plant, assisting in the construction of a $54 million reheat furnace, executing the installation of a new pump and motor system, and implementing new safety and job requirement policies.

Shea also was a part of the Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship program where she encouraged 96 middle school students and teachers to learn about the engineering design process. She is a mentor for WEPO and EON, and is a leader for Penn State WEP Girl Scout Saturdays.

The Engineering Career Resources and Employer Relations office recognizes students each year for their outstanding achievement in co-op and internship positions.

To be chosen for these awards, applicants must submit a résumé and personal statements along with letters of support from the university and employer. Award recipients are chosen by past winners and are each provided with a $1,000 scholarship.  Other nominees receive certificates of recognition.

The Dr. James Slick Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award and the Anita M. Todd Internship Student of the Year Award are each given annually to students who show high levels of personal motivation and talent in their short-term professional work assignments. Both of these women demonstrate these skills in their day-to-day life, in and out of the classroom.
