Annual John H. Harmon Memorial 5K Run/Walk benefits pulmonary medicine

The late John H. Harmon was very active, enjoying running and managing his family-owned furniture store, until his diagnosis with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a scarring lung disease that is often fatal.

Harmon’s family, his widow Bonnie and their three children, host the John H. Harmon Memorial 5K Run/Walk each year in October to help fund research of IPF and other pulmonary disease. Research efforts at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine are led by Dr. Rebecca Bascom, pulmonary critical care specialist, and Anne Dimmock, human research technologist in pulmonary medicine.

Bonnie Harmon and her daughter Robin recently presented the $2,100 proceeds from this year’s event to Bascom and Dimmock.
