Kyung Min Kim, a senior psychology major at Penn State Beaver, was a double winner in the International Students section of the recent Penn State Global Perspectives Photography Contest. The contest was sponsored by the University Office of Global Programs.
Kim was the winner in the “Places” category for his work titled “Abandoned,” and he also won the “Me Abroad” category with his photo, “Looking Back…”
Kim will receive a custom calendar featuring the 12 winning photographs in his section, a framed print of each winning photograph, and a certificate. The winning photographs will be on display in the Global Programs Lounge through December and will be featured in the next issue of The Global Lion.
Kim’s photography has been displayed frequently throughout Beaver campus for several years, and he currently has an exhibit of photographs in the lower lobby of the Student Union Building. Some of his work has been done as part of an integrative arts independent study course that allows students to participate in creative projects, including research and design, which are supervised on an individual basis and fall outside the scope of formal classes.
He is a native of Seoul, South Korea, and studies frequently with Carol Schafer, associate professor of theatre, integrative arts, and women’s studies at Beaver campus. In October, he was honored at the annual campus Donor and Scholarship Dinner when he received the Ambridge Wolves Club Trustee Scholarship.
As a freshman, Kim participated in the eighth annual Penn State Beaver Undergraduate Research Fair where he and a fellow student won second place for their poster presentation on the topic of “The Gap: Gender Conflicts in Generations.” His faculty mentor for the project was Clare Conry-Murray, assistant professor of psychology at Beaver.
Judges for this year’s Global Perspectives Photography Contest were Katarin Parizek, assistant professor of integrative arts; Lonnie Graham, associate professor of art; and Steven Rubin, assistant professor of art, College of Arts and Architecture. The fourth judge was John Beale, senior lecturer, College of Communications.
