Shenango to hold spaghetti fundraiser to support kids with cancer

On Friday, Dec. 14, Penn State Shenango auditorium will be filled with the aroma of Italy when the campus holds its second annual THON Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by Penn State Shenango benefiting THON. The food is being donated by Ferrara’s A Taste of Italy and Italian Specialties located in Sharon, Pa. All proceeds will support kids with cancer.

Dinner will include spaghetti and meatball, salad, bread and butter, and cake. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $8 or at the door for $10. Children and senior citizen tickets are $5 anytime. For advanced ticket sales, stop in the Penn State Students Affairs Office in Sharon Hall located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon.

In addition to dinner, a basket raffle will be available. Each purchased dinner ticket will include one free basket ticket. Other basket raffle tickets may be purchased for $5 for a sheet of 25.

“We are hoping for a great turnout this year,” said THON Chairperson Sara Johnson from Hermitage. “Our committee members have been working extremely hard on this and other local THON fundraisers to support kids who have cancer. It is such a worthy cause and touches the hearts of so many people. We hope our community will come out and support this event.”

THON is the largest student run philanthropy in the world, where students passionately raise money to create awareness opportunities, fund research, and assist families struggling with the fight against cancer. Since 1977, when THON was first established, Penn State students have raised over $84 million dollars for the Four Diamonds Fund. This effort engages more than 15,000 students across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Penn State Shenango students are especially motivated to make a difference. In 2011-12, Penn State Shenango raised approximately $5,600 and is committed to making this year’s fundraiser even more successful with the support of its community.

Those unable to attend the event may make a contribution to pediatric cancer online at www.thon.org. Donors are able to specify Shenango campus. For more information, contact the Penn State Shenango Student Affairs office at 724-983-2836.
