UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- "Committing Humor," an exhibition of visual journals completed during the Penn State Art Education graduate colloquium “Subversive Humor in Visual Culture,” will be on display in Borland Gallery, 125 Borland Building, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 10 to 14.
A public opening reception will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 11), including light refreshments and lively conversation with the artist/educators. The show will feature a range of media including drawing, sculpture, fabric and video, among others.
"Committing Humor" marks the culmination of the colloquium, during which students and faculty have explored diverse visual expressions of comicality, jest, farce and play in the artistic and pedagogical practices of local, national and international artists, and arts educators.
With the leadership of Karen Keifer-Boyd, professor of art education and women’s studies at Penn State, the exhibition tackles major, contemporary themes identified by graduate students in social justice art education. Colloquium participants have investigated the potentiality of humor as artistic strategy to open up opportunities for viewers to reinforce or challenge their prior understanding(s) of everyday life and the experiences and ideologies of the worlds around them.
