Engineering student design showcase set for Dec. 13

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Students from the senior capstone design courses will showcase their work from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 13), in the South Annex Gym at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Students will present their solutions to real-world engineering problems and design challenges. Industry clients such as ArcelorMittal, The Boeing Co. and Dresser-Rand sponsor the projects.

Projects and posters will be judged for cash awards sponsored by Boeing, BP and Lockheed Martin Corp.

Students in EDSGN 100 will display their first-year, client-driven design project sponsored by Harris RF Communications. Their challenge was to develop a charger system for mobile devices that operates from energy sources other than a standard wall or vehicle charger. The charger system should be designed for a specific mobile device and pattern of use. Devices could range from common cell phones to higher power radios and tablets, and could be in a building, outside an urban environment and many other locations.

Students in EDSGN 130 will present their final design project, which is a multi-use building to serve as a community center. They will explain how they considered functionality of the building as well as the aesthetic appeal during the design phase.
