Gallagher invited to MLS Player Combine

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Senior defender John Gallagher received an invitation to the 2013 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine, held Jan. 11-15 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The First Team All-Big Ten honoree will join 53 of his peers at the event, held in the week leading to the MLS SuperDraft Jan. 17 in Indianapolis, Ind.

The full list of combine invitees is available here.

A committee of NCAA Division I coaches from every conference, as well as MLS representatives, selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Generation adidas signings, non-collegiate players, and additional college seniors will be announced in the coming weeks.

Gallagher made the move to left back this season and excelled in his new role. The Pine Bush, N.Y., native tallied five points on three assists and a goal, but proved valuable in set pieces while handling corner duties. Gallagher, who finished fourth on the team in minutes, played a large part on a defense that allowed just 15 goals in 16 regular-season clashes while notching seven shutouts.

The suffocating defense helped the Nittany Lions earn a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship. Gallagher finished his Penn State career with 36 starts in 54 appearances, including 33 starting nods over his final two campaigns.

The Nittany Lion is one of three Big Ten players making the trip, joining Michigan defender Kofi Opare and Indiana’s keeper, Luis Soffner.

Other Nittany Lions who have taken part in past MLS player combines include midfielder Matheus Braga (2008-10), forward Jason Yeisley (2005-07, 09), forward Simon Omekanda (2003-06), and midfielder Brian Devlin (2002-05).
