Mont Alto to host American Mathematics Contests in February

On Feb. 5, Penn State Mont Alto will offer American Mathematics Contests 10 and 12, mathematics competitions for high school students administered by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The campus hopes to have many local high school students for this event, which promotes the study of mathematics and acts as the first step in the path to the International Mathematical Olympiad.

According to the MAA, “The main purpose of (the contests) is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through solving challenging problems in a timed, multiple-choice format.” The contest is open to all students, including home-schooled students, who meet the MAA age and grade equivalency requirements; see amc.maa.org for details.

The contest is free for participants, but pre-registration is required. To register, please visit ma.psu.edu and click on the link for AMC registration. For general questions about the AMC, please visit the AMC web site. For specific questions about the AMC at Mont Alto, please contact Kira Hamman, instructor of mathematics, at kira@psu.edu.
