UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two teams came away with top project awards from the Engineering Design Showcase on Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Engineering Design Showcase is the culmination of a semester-long effort by students to solve real-world problems posed by industry sponsors. Participants include first-year students through seniors across a number of engineering disciplines.
The projects "Laser Non-Contact Measurement of Moving Product," sponsored by ArcelorMittal, and "LNG Test Rig Movable LSD Vanes," sponsored by Dresser Rand, won first-place Lockheed Martin Design Awards for best project.
The ArcelorMittal team consisted of Gabriel Bertini, Erin Derhaag, Sean Kromer and Nurlan Nigmetullin and was advised by Michael Immel, a senior technical specialist in industrial and manufacturing engineering. The Dresser Rand team included Husain Bani Hashem, Aaron Lafevers, Ryan Quinzan-Singer and Tyler Quinzan-Singer and was advised by Domenic Santavicca, professor of mechanical engineering.
Second place went to two projects: "Assistive Device to Allow Disabled Person to Operate Gear Shift Release," sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Support Group, and "Develop a Modern Machinery Cab Design," sponsored by U.S. Steel.
The Central Pennsylvania SCI team consisted of Kim Do Yul, Benjamin Garth, Graham Ginder, Wei He, HaNul Kim, HyeonMin Kim, Justin Malament, Son Seungwan and Kwon Young Min and was advised by Leland Engel, instructor in mechanical engineering. The U.S. Steel team included Joseph Homerski, Tyler Kanter, Taylor Kruse and Alexander Stepanian and was advised by Catherine Harmonosky, associate professor of industrial engineering and material science and engineering.
Third place went to "Explosive Gas Mitigation System," sponsored by Bechtel Plant Machinery, and "Auto Folding Clothes Drying Rack," sponsored by Quality of Life Technology Center.
The Bechtel team included Mark Cypher, Nicholas Plate, Christopher Smith and Louis Wust and was advised by Michael Erdman, instructor in engineering science and mechanics and Walter L. Robb Director of Engineering Leadership Development. The Quality of Life team included Park Chan Gyoon, Chang-Ju Chung, Maria Diliberto, Kum Ju Hyun, HanHae Lim, Ahn Namyoung, Amy Szabo and Christopher Thomas and was advised by Leland Engel.
The Lockheed Martin Design Award for best poster went to the Dresser Rand-sponsored "LNG Test Rig Movable LSD Vanes" project.
Second place for best poster went to "Assistive Device to Hold Eating Utensils," sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania SCI. The team consisted of Kiley Coombe, Bradley Dryer, Nicholas Gunawan, Emily Lafferty and Tyler McCartney and was advised by Dave Cannon, associate professor of industrial engineering.
Third place for best poster went to "Colombian Volcanic Lake Explorer," sponsored by the Penn State Astrobiology Research Center. The team included Kristoffer Diedrick, Ziwang Sheng, Charles Szell and Zachary Wentz and was advised by Dave Cannon.
The BP People's Choice Award went to the Quality of Life Technology Center-sponsored "Auto Folding Drying Rack."
The Best Sponsor Award went to the Boeing Company for its project "Underwater Unmanned Vehicle."
