Penn State Shenango will hold its 2012 fall commencement ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 21), in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Fred Leeds, chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on 67 graduating students.
The ceremony will open with the academic processional played by pianist Larry Perna followed by the National Anthem and the Penn State Shenango Song sung by the Shenango Campus Choir, directed by music instructor Ferruccio Germani.
Phil Nash, associate professor of history and faculty marshal, will then welcome graduates, family members and guests to the 2012 fall commencement ceremony.
This year, Penn State Shenango welcomes Frank Augustine, of New Castle, Pa., as its guest speaker. Augustine is a 1976 graduate of Shenango High School in Lawrence County. He spent two years at the Penn State Beaver campus before transferring to University Park where he graduated in the fall of 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in health planning and administration.
Upon graduation, Augustine worked several months in his field at a nursing home before he returned home to work in his family’s business, Augustine's Italian Village. Augustine’s, which has been in business since 1957, manufactures frozen pizzas for grocery stores in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. For the past two years, its pizzas have been sold at PNC Park and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
Augustine was past president of the Lawrence County Penn State Club, president of the Lawrence County American Legion Baseball League and served on the Shenango High School Board of Education.
As owner, Augustine is currently working in the sales end of his business. He and his wife Kim have been married for 30 years and have two children. His daughter, Ashley, graduated from Slippery Rock University and is an elementary school teacher. His son, Frank J., graduated from Penn State University Park in 2010 in the school of business and also works in the family business.
This year’s graduating student address will be given by Holly M. Beck, of Jamestown, Pa. Beck will be graduating with a bachelor of science degree in human development and family studies and a minor in gerontology. She has also earned certificates in diversity studies and in children, youth and family studies. Beck has consistently been on the Penn State Dean’s List during her tenure at the Shenango campus.
In addition to attending college, Beck is the office manager at Newton Finanacial Services LLC, in Mercer, Pa. Outside of college and work, she volunteers at Family Hospice & Palliative Care in Pittsburgh and Imagine Cleveland Academy in Cleveland. Beck is a certified nurse aide.
Beck is married and has two daughters. She plans on attending graduate school to obtain her master’s degree in social administration.
The commencement ceremony will conclude with the induction of the 2012 Penn State graduates into the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society by Society President Caroline Crawford.
