UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence is hosting the following programs:
-- Cindy Decker Raynak, senior instructional designer and consultant in the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, will lead “Online New Instructor Orientation – Spring 2013” from Jan. 7 through Feb. 22.
Good teaching involves planning, lots of it and at every level. This online, self-directed workshop, open to all new instructors at Penn State, is offered at the start of each semester through ANGEL, Penn State’s course management system. This self-directed workshop will provide a brief introduction to the resources and strategies that are crucial to good teaching and planning. ANGEL access information will be provided to participants in early January.
The New Instructor Orientation is free and open to all instructors at Penn State. In order to receive a letter of completion, participants will need to complete two assignments. Completion of the New Instructor Orientation satisfies a requirement of the Graduate School Teaching Certificate.

-- An undergraduate student panel moderated by professor Robert Melton will discuss “Student Perceptions on Learning” from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in Room 220 Boucke Building.
The discussion, sponsored by Penn State Learning and the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, will feature a talented panel of undergraduates who will share their approaches to learning and their best learning experiences in and outside the classroom. The panel will be moderated by Melton, professor of aerospace engineering and an Eisenhower Teaching Award recipient. This event is open to anyone with instructional responsibilities.

-- Andrew Porter and Lauren Kooistra, graduate consultants with the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will present “TA 101: A Guide to the Teaching Assistant” from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in Room 315 Rider Building.
Participants will get pointers on how to clarify faculty expectations, grade in an effective and time-efficient way, and handle student conflict. The workshop is designed for new teaching assistants, but is open to anyone who could use some tips on being a TA.
