Abington names new athletics director

Penn State Abington Chancellor Karen Wiley Sandler announced today (Jan. 14) that the college has named Shawne McCoy the new director of athletics, intramurals and recreation. McCoy succeeds Karen Weaver, who stepped down effective Dec. 31.

McCoy officially joins Abington on Feb. 4 and will represent the college at the 2013 NCAA Convention in Texas this week.

"I am excited and honored to be selected as the new director of athletics, intramurals and recreation at Penn State Abington," McCoy said. "I would like to thank Chancellor Sandler, Senior Director of Student Affairs Gale Siegel and the entire search committee for entrusting me with this opportunity. I look forward to working with our coaches, staff and faculty to help provide our student-athletes with the best possible experience."

McCoy spent the past six years as the assistant athletic director at Division III St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he managed all aspects of athletic scheduling and contracts, transportation, equipment facilities, sports information, compliance, and game and event operations for the 17 men’s and women’s teams. McCoy also served as the on-site event manager for all of the Seahawks’ home varsity events and championships.

McCoy arrived at St. Mary’s in 2001 and served as sports information director for six years before being promoted to assistant athletic director in 2008. In addition to his duties at St. Mary’s, he also served as the assistant commissioner for communications for the Capital Athletic Conference from 2006 to 2008.

Prior to his appointment with St. Mary's, McCoy served as the director of conference information for the Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He was responsible for the daily operations of the conference's information office, including maintenance and development of the GLIAC website.

In 1999, McCoy served as the media relations director for the NCAA Division II Volleyball National Championship, which GLIAC hosted. While with GLIAC, he also provided statistical services on a freelance basis to the University of Detroit Mercy.

McCoy was employed in the sports information office at Wayne State University in Detroit for two years before joining GLIAC.

He is a 1998 graduate of Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a minor in sports studies. A Michigan native, he is currently pursuing his master's degree in sports management from Southern New Hampshire University.

McCoy’s predecessor, Weaver, assumed a faculty post at Drexel University after six years at Abington.
