Krypton impact with graphene

Atomistic-scale simulation of the molecular dynamics of a noble gas (Krypton, blue) cation impact with graphene. The impact knocks out a carbon atom (red) creating a graphene vacancy. Colors on the graphene lattice indicate local strain -- high strain areas are colored red. The CyberLAMP computer cluster will allow far larger simulations and produce better statistics on defect size and defect relaxation helping the researchers to connect this work to experiment.
