The geometry of the research device that the research team used for measuring spintorque consists of a thin sandwich of a ferromagnetic metal (permalloy) on top of an 8-nm thin layer of a topological insulator (bismuth selenide). The scientists send a microwave frequency current through the device in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, exciting the ferromagnet into precessional motion like a top.
