Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to an estimated 9,000 people inside the newly expanded Recreation Hall on Jan. 21, 1965. King told the crowd that “segregation is on its death bed today,” and the only question was “how costly the segregationist will make the funeral.” King was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968.
