Student rings the Old Main Bell

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, bells were sounded nationwide Aug. 28, including at Penn State's University Park campus. As King brought his speech to a close, he urged listeners to "let freedom ring." Vanessa Herrera, a graduate student in counseling education, rang the bell outside Old Main while her sisters from the Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority offered support. The sorority raises money for the "I Have a Dream" Foundation, a nonprofit that empowers children in low-income communities to achieve higher education. Forty-eight years ago, King delivered a speech at Penn State's Rec Hall, where a historical marker now commemorates the event.
