illustration showing scan of young and old brain

A composite image shows differences in brain regions supporting intentional forgetting. While trying to forget irrelevant information to focus on what's important, younger adults activate the right superior frontal gyrus and the superior parietal cortex, brain regions associated with inhibition and suppression, while older adults activate the right inferior parietal cortex, a region associated with attention and focus.
