The 47th annual AAUW State College Branch Used Book Sale will be held Saturday, May 10, through Tuesday, May 13, at the Snider Agricultural Arena on Penn State's University Park campus. The doors will open at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. daily. Book sale co-chairs Suzanne Kerlin and Sherry Crassweller are trimming cardboard boxes to use as end caps to hold books on the tables.
Sherry Crassweller examines the mountain of boxed books at the club's book warehouse. The sale takes the better part of a year to put together. More than 200,000 books plus CDs will be sold during the four-day event.
Book sale co-chair Suzanne Kerlin examines the boxed books. Friday night, four trucks and a volunteer army will move the boxes over to the Ag Arena, unpack and set up for the extremely popular sale, which draws book lovers and book dealers from all over the East Coast.
This mountain of books required 50 volunteers to sort, price and pack. Popular sellers are science fiction, sports, cookbooks, children's books and science and engineering tomes.
Cookbooks and childrens books fill these boxes. Yearly, it takes about 7,000 man hours by volunteers to get the books ready and to do the sale.
