On second down and goal from the Illini 3-yard line, Silas Redd surged forward in a crowd and crossed the goal line for the Nittany Lions' first and only touchdown of the day, to put Penn State on top 10-7 with 1:08 left on the game clock. Penn State won the game at Beaver Stadium, to give Joe Paterno his 409th win to make him the winningest Division I coach ever, surpassing Grambling's Eddie Robinson.

With just five seconds left on the game clock, Illinois set up to try a 42-yard field goal that would have tied the game vs. Penn State and send the Oct. 29 contest into overtime. Both Illinois and Penn State took timeouts before the kick attempt, and Penn State fans in the student section took advantage of the delay in the action to rush toward the end zone. With most of the students crowded into the area behind the goalposts, yelling and waving, Illini kicker Derek Dimke made his attempt ... and missed, giving the Nittany Lions a 10-7 victory.
