Baumann's field of concentration is American politics, where he teaches and conducts research in the areas of state and local politics, legislatures, elections, and parties. His research focuses on the relationship of institutional design and political behavior, and he has ongoing projects examining the career decisions of state legislators, the role of PACs on party polarization, and the use of state voter rolls to examine turnout and voting decisions. Baumann teaches courses in American national government, legislative politics, electoral analysis, state and local politics, and parties and interest groups.
