Gift to Schreyer Honors College reflects Penn State's lifetime impact

Listen to a conversation with Jerry Polis, and his Penn State connection comes through loud and clear. "The biggest thing Penn State taught me was how to think, and I believe that's helped me a lot in life," said Polis, who graduated from the University in 1953 with a B.A. in commerce and has lived in Nevada ever since. "I feel like Penn State was very good to me, and I would like to be able to repay it in a small way." Repayment came recently in the form of a $1 million commitment from Polis and his wife, Lotty, to establish the Jerry Polis Family Honors Scholarship to benefit students in the Schreyer Honors College.

Chapel family commits inaugural funding for Paterno Fellows program

With a commitment of $1 million, Penn State alumna Virginia Chapel and her husband, John Chapel, have endowed the first scholarship to be awarded to students participating in the Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program in the College of the Liberal Arts. The Paterno Fellows program, established earlier this year, aims to challenge liberal arts students who want to maximize their potential by engaging in rigorous academic and co-curricular experiences that will enhance their education at Penn State.

Student technology tutors sought

Undergraduate or graduate students at University Park in any major may apply to become a Technology Learning Assistant (TLA). TLAs are paired with faculty members to provide them with five to ten tutoring sessions on basic computer skills, e-mail and file organization, PowerPoint, Excel, creating Web pages, electronic gradebook software, and other applications.

Schreyer Honors College honors faculty with teaching, advising awards

The coordinator of an interdepartmental major in the College of Agricultural Sciences and an Eberly College of Science faculty member who has taught the honors General Biochemistry course for more than 20 years were recognized Thursday (Sept. 25) by the Schreyer Honors College during its annual awards ceremony. Lester C. Griel Jr., a professor of veterinary science in the College of Agricultural Sciences, received the 2008 Excellence in Honors Advising Award. Teh-hui Kao, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the Eberly College of Science, was named the recipient of the 2008 Excellence in Honors Teaching Award. Students currently enrolled in the Schreyer Honors College nominate faculty for these awards.

Deans make campus smaller with personal interaction

Penn State's University Park campus may at first seem daunting to some, and the idea of personally getting to know academic leaders may seem far-fetched. But deans at Penn State's largest campus are finding ways to make it much smaller while getting to know the students in their colleges. Christian Brady, dean of the Schreyer Honors College, and James Thomas, dean of the Smeal College of Business, are among those deans. Though they frequently have different focuses and tasks in their day-to-day administrative duties, both are passionate about creating a sense of community with their students.

Penn State Brandywine welcomes new Schreyer scholars

All seven Brandywine students who applied to the Schreyer Honors College during the 2007-2008 academic year have been accepted and will pursue their education at either Brandywine or University Park. Juniors Teron A. Meyers, corporate communication and Lindley M. Jones, business, and sophomore Si Cong (James) Wang, bioengineering, will join current Brandywine scholars Adrienne Showalter and Dana Gibson, both English majors. Additional Brandywine students accepted in the program are Hong-hanh (Lina) M. Khong, College of Agriculture; Alyce A. DiLauro, College of Communications; Dong-Ya (Suzy) Zhou, Smeal Business College; Rachel Hanson, College of the Liberal Arts. These students, all entering their junior year in the fall, will join former Brandywine students Peter Spizzirri, Emily Helms, and Alex Lampros, at University Park.

Class of 2008 graduate embodies entrepreneurship program

College graduates don't always find a job in their majors. They're even more hard-pressed to find work in a field that combines both their major and minor fields of study. Penn State class of 2008 graduate Erik Davidson came up with a solution to that problem: he's his own boss. The Monroe, Conn., native found a way to enter the professional world using both his electrical engineering major and his engineering entrepreneurship minor.

Josh Ambrose, a recent Penn State graduate from the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts, writes from the Middle East while exploring soils of ancient and modern civilizations. Ambrose and five classmates will spend four weeks traveling Turkey and Jordan with Kate Butler, senior lecturer in soil science. Stay tuned for dispatches as Ambrose discovers and describes the relationship between soils and society.

"Limpiabotas," Lori Zimmaro said slowly, folding her long legs Indian-style on her blue comforter. Her voice resonated off the high walls of her bedroom. She pulled her short, blond hair into a ponytail, her blue eyes sparkling.

"Oh right!" I exclaimed at last. "Limpia-botas! I get it! Spanish for 'cleans shoes'!"

A Healthy Red

The sign says "No Students Allowed." Elizabeth Foley and Joseph Slak proceed anyway, through the chemistry lab at Penn State Beaver and into a back room normally used by lab technicians preparing experiments for their next lecture. The two students have worked in this room before, and they have the milk crates stacked with graphs and notes to prove it. Under fluorescent lights, surrounded by lab equipment, they put on their white coats, goggles, and gloves. Then they open a bottle of wine.

History Through the Negatives

I went to the Unity March in October of 2000 and began to take pictures, learning photography as I went along. What I saw that day, and later in my developed photographs, I could not forget. I wanted people to see what I had seen. The crying and laughing, the anger and fear—it was historical. You can almost hear and feel these emotions if you look closely at the tiny photographs of the mosaic. Had I been good at photography, the image you see would not exist.

Home is Where the Art Is

When Katie Murken isn't preparing projects for her art classes, she spends her time on regular day-to-day tasks, just as we all do. She vacuums the carpets, sweeps the floors, washes the dishes, and mends her clothes with needle and thread. The difference between most people and Murken, though, is that her day-to-day tasks inspire her artwork, which explores various aspects of domesticity.
